WildFest SA Program Overview:  The program offers something for everyone:  lectures, workshops, and field trips; cycling, paddling, hiking, birding, and star-gazing activities; special events at the San Antonio Zoo, Bracken Bat Cave, and other unique locales within San Antonio and the surrounding areas; and self-guided and structured events along the renowned River Walk, at the San Antonio Missions  National Historical Park, and at other cultural, natural, and environmental treasures.
 
The festival will be held at venues throughout Bexar (pronounced “bear”) County, from Medina Natural Area and Mitchell Lake Audubon Center in the south to Government Canyon in the west, Fredrich Park to the north, and the Botanical Garden just northeast of the heart of downtown San Antonio.  Field trips, workshops, and seminars will focus on birds, plants, bats, history, art, archaeology, geology, water and other topics linked to nature.

Join us to walk the Nature Trail and shorelines at Calaveras Lake.  We will identify what we see including shoreline and water birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and plants.  *Children 15 and under only pay $2.

Introduction to the San Antonio Natural Areas and Aquifer Protection

Venue:  Friedrich Park

Take a leisurely hike through the park where the leader will explain why the City purchased the land and why it’s kept in a natural state.  The leader will explain how the Edwards Aquifer is made up of limestone and point out its fragile state.  The leader will point out the importance of native plants, shrubs, and trees that conserve water and survive without the need for contaminating chemicals.  ADULTS ONLY.   A $2 donation is appreciated.

Engineering & Aesthetics:  San Antonio’s Urban Flood Management System

    SARA Staff

Venue:  Various Sites

Did you know that the famed San Antonio River Walk serves a vital flood control function for downtown San Antonio?  Or did you know that a three-mile-long underground tunnel diverts San Antonio River flood waters from the downtown area?  Learn about these and other “Flash Flood Alley” facts in a guided tour that begins at the headquarters of the San Antonio River Authority, 100 E. Guenther, and then guides participants to Olmos Dam, the San Antonio River Tunnel Inlet, the River Walks Convent Park, and Gate 5 at Nueces Street Dam.  Along the way, you will learn not only how this infrastructure works together, but also how its many beautification eatures blend the components into the surrounding environment.  Youth friendly, ages 11-17 accompanied by an adult.  Meet at SARA, 100 E. Guenther.

South Texas’ Native Plants

Calling All Frogs:  Understanding Why Frogs Make Sound Active Image
   Rama Ratnam

Venue:   Mitchell Lake Audubon Center

Dr. Rama Ratnam, UTSA professor, will discuss why frogs make sound, the different types of sounds frogs make, and how his research on frog vocalization has implications for understanding human hearing and speech communication.  Following this seminar, Dr. Ratnam will take participants into the field to hear what the frogs at Mitchell Lake have to say.

Emergence from Bracken Bat Cave

Venue:   Bracken Bat Cave

Bracken Bat Cave is home to the world’s largest colony of mammals.  Almost without fail, they all leave for dinner at dusk each evening.  Join us for a truly unique experience.  Access to the Bracken Cave is via a private, gated, unpaved ranch road.  Map available at Registration Desk.  MEET at gate to the property on Natural Bridge Caverns Road at 6:00 P.M.  The gate will be locked at 6:10 P.M. so please be on time so the rest of the group is not held up.  WAIVER REQUIRED.  NO ALCOHOL.  NO PETS.  CATERING AND TRANSPORTATION NOT INCLUDED by Bat Conservation International.

Enchanted Evening Tour               
Z00 Staff

Venue:  San Antonio Zoo

This 2 hour tour focuses on the Zoo’s role in conservation and if we’re lucky, participants may even get to hear the lions roar, the hyenas laugh or the screamers—you guessed it—scream.  Designed for adults and children 12 and up.
